Nuts and Bolts Puzzle: 8 Tips to Clear Every Level

Nuts and Bolts Puzzle: 8 Tips to Clear Every Level

Quick answer: In a nuts and bolts puzzle, you remove screws to drop every plate off the board, or sort colored nuts so each bolt holds one color. To win, start with the top-most plates, keep empty holes or bolts free for emergencies, and plan two or three moves ahead before moving any screw.

Two types of nuts and bolts puzzles

1. Unscrew-the-plates puzzles. Plates are pinned by screws. Move screws into empty holes so plates fall away. Play Nuts & Bolts: Screwing Puzzle or Screw Sort: Boltworks.

2. Nut color-sort puzzles. Stacks of colored nuts sit on bolts. Move nuts until every bolt holds one color, like water sort. Play Nuts Puzzle: Color Sort.

8 tips to clear every level

  1. Work top to bottom. Upper plates often block lower ones. Free them first.
  2. Find the plate with the fewest screws. It falls fastest and opens space.
  3. Never fill your last free hole unless that move drops a plate.
  4. Watch rotation. A plate held by one screw swings; make sure it will not block another hole.
  5. For color sort, build one color at a time, just like water sort.
  6. Keep one bolt empty as long as possible in nut-sorting levels.
  7. Use boosters late. Save extra holes or undo for the final, hardest moves.
  8. Restart early if the board is clearly locked. A fresh start is faster than forcing it.

Why are screw puzzles so popular?

They mix the satisfaction of sorting with a physical, toy-like feel. Each level is short, the goal is clear, and the "click" of a plate falling away is very rewarding. That is why screw puzzles became one of the biggest mobile puzzle trends of recent years.
